Last night, a friend of my wife who came home for a vacation from Bahrain asked us if we could possibly meet her and accompany her to try out Oh My Gulay Artist Café at Session Road. Well, we answered yes for a pretty much obvious reason. First, we don’t have to worry on who’s paying the tab and second, my wife’s haven’t been to Oh My Gulay before and she’s excited about the place. I’ve been there once, and after 5 years get the chance to visit it again only now. So we meet my wife’s friend and her boyfriend at Starbucks Café at SM City Baguio and after a few hi’s and hello’s, our group decided to make our way to Oh My Gulay café. We arrived at around 6:30 in the evening and surprisingly, there are only a handful of customers who are either trying out the café’s delicious meals or just passing their time chatting with someone and feeling the relaxed ambiance of the place. The first thing I did when we arrived was to proceed to the balcony of the café which boasts of a beautiful Burnham Park view and cool air. About OMG (Oh My Gulay) Aside from being a café, the place is a haven for artist and art enthusiasts as evidenced by its environmentally and ethnic art inspired interiors. I really haven’t researched on the history of the establishment but what really caught my attention was the name of its owner indicated on the business permit sign-Eric De Guia. For those who haven’t heard about Eric De Guia, he is dubbed as the “Father of Philippine independent cinema” and who goes by the name Kidlat Tahimik. So that’s the reason why there’s art and ethnicity all over the place. Oh My Gulay Artist Café is located at the heart of Session Road on La Azotea building fronting Don Henricos Restaurant and it lies at the top most floor which is a not so comfortable 5 floors ascend. The place itself is a magical combination of an art gallery, a forested area and a dining area all neatly rolled into one. Most of the stuffs like the tables and chairs and decorations are made of indigenous materials. Cordilleran arts and crafts are basically the inspiration as evident in every nook. It’s a picture perfect place where you can take a picture of yourself while waiting for your orders. Dining experience Obviously, as the name implies, the café’s for veggie and organic food loving individuals. Carnivores are off limits here as they only serve vegetarian and organic foods. For health conscious ones, this is the place for you. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced so basically, you can be sure that it’s served fresh from Baguio and Benguet farms. Foods are cooked on the spot and served hot. We ordered their best seller which is Anak ng Putanesca, Pancit Gulay, OMG Salad, Lumpia Salad, Talong Parmigiana. For the dessert we ordered Mango Crepe. My personal favorite is the Talong Parmiginia. I love the softness of the eggplant on top of the bread and the richness of its taste. On the other hand, my wife’s favorite is Anak ng Putanesca. We enjoyed the food and the health benefits from eating them. Would I recommend it? Overall, twas an enjoyable and a healthy experience for all of us. The ambiance is relaxed as the place is not crowded and hot. The food’s great. It didn’t took them so long to prepare and serve it. The price is considerably reasonable which most of us would take into consideration before ordering. And the staffs are courteous and patient considering that we were the only costumers left and we didn’t even noticed it because we were so busy sharing stories. They didn’t even bother to frown or make faces at us. Kudos to the staffs for extending your closing time for us. Finally, would I recommend it? 100% yeah! I would even market them. So when you’re here in Baguio City, don’t forget to visit OH MY GULAY Artist Café located at the Penthouse/5th Floor of La Azotea Building, Session Road (across Don Henricos Restaurant). They are open from Monday to Sunday, 11:00 am until 9:00 in the evening (Kitchen will close at 8:00 pm).
