It's not the first time that the world has encountered a pandemic with such a great magnitude but it's the first for this generation to have one. Many were caught unprepared for its impact not only economically but emotionally as well. Things we only see in the movies before were brought to real life. The COVID-19 disease which was caused by the new coronavirus strain was relatively unheard of until its outbreak last December last year in Wuhan, China and from there it was brought/transmitted by travelers to the other parts of the world. The first case of the deadly COVID-19 here in the Philippines was recorded by the Department Of Health in January 2020 with a female Chinese and the local transmission was confirmed in March. Here in Baguio City, many local events including the world famous Panagbenga or the Baguio Flower Festival has been cancelled as early as the second week of March while the first ever recorded and confirmed COVID case in the city is that of a 61 year old woman with a travel history to Italy. Furthermore, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has declared a citywide community quarantine starting March 13 to April 15 as a precautionary measure against the virus . During the quarantine, strict curfew schedule were enforced to all Baguio City residents and many establishments and popular tourist spots were also closed except for essential businesses like groceries, market, banks, and hospitals. Life during the quarantine was mostly tough for many, mine included. I lost my other source of income as I rely on tourists coming to Baguio City by offering them affordable accommodations and tour guiding. Until now, there's still no certainty when tourism in the city will be back to normal again. What I'm grateful is that somehow we still manage to survive our everyday lives and still making both ends meet. And of course, we're still healthy.
