It has been more than a week now and the weather hasn't shown even a bit of improvement. Still wet and freezin' cold in the suppose to be summer capital of the Philippines. Started with Egay and then followed by Falcon which ultimately pulled the southwest monsoon or the Habagat which causes this unforgiving weather condition that we are currently experiencing in the Cordillera region. Rain is continuously pouring all throughout the day and add to that, intermittent strong winds which currently makes the city a not so lovely place to roam or enjoy. Temperature right now in Baguio City is pegged at 16° Celsius the lowest and 21° Celsius at its max. Well pro-creation is at its peak level right now in the City due to the cold and freezin' weather and I think residents cannot be at fault here anymore since human instinct dictates that weather such as this only requires the warmth of the opposite sex of the same specie. I cannot even feel my hands and fingers anymore due to extreme cold. Image courtesy of ricarantsandraves.wordpress.com What to expect? From the months of June to early December, weather conditions like this is very common in Baguio City. Reminds me of that town in the movie Twilight. Yes, Forks, Washington where the rate of rainfall is high and temperature is cold and adding to the backdrop are forest with pine trees much like Baguio. If you are a fan of the movie and want to experience the climate of Forks, Washington then by all means, come to Baguio during this months. Fog is a problem here as zero visibility all over the city occur during rainy season. Driving can be quite dangerous for drivers if you cannot see the road you're traversing at. Just a word of advice for drivers who are not familiar with the roads and the terrain of Baguio to take extreme precaution when driving under heavy fog or better yet to postpone until such time that the fog has already subsided. Cold-related illnesses like hypothermia, flu, cough, and cold are also a common thing in the city. A sip of the proverbial chicken soup will somehow ease the discomfort. Land slides are basically what we eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Baguio during typhoons and monsoons. People from this place are already used to land slides so they basically knew instantly the SOP during bad weather. Areas in Baguio which are most prone to land slides includes Kennon Road, Pinsao, Dominican, Mirador, Central Fairview, Lucnab, Monticello, Pacdal and Irisan. The only area in Baguio that is susceptible to flooding is the City Camp lagoon which is the catch basin to all the flood waters in the City. Where to go? Basically, rainy days are the most boring days and times in the City. As The Carpenters said in one of their song "rainy days and Mondays always gets me down" and true to the lyrics of the songs Baguio is somehow a "down" place when its raining. Virtually you can't go anywhere, well except to the malls of course. Most tourist spots can be dull when you know for a fact that when you go to visit them you'll end up getting wet and cold. Shopping for pasalubongs can also be a hassle especially when your place of interest is the City Market. SM City Baguio is one place, I think, where comfort and convenience during rainy days are guaranteed. It's a one stop shop where all your needs are there. Almost. Now if you are really do in need to buy pasalubongs since it's your last day in the City already but stuck in the rain, then Maharlika Livelihood Complex is one place that I can surely recommend. Maharlika is a haven for pasalubong buyers where everything locally made are sold. From fresh strawberries, jams, peanut brittles, souvenir shirts and even the most favorite Barrel Man can be found at Maharlika. Acoustic bars abound in the City are also a popular hangout especially with local folks here during the rainy season. You can listen to mellow acoustic songs belted out by local singers while drinking with your buddies a few beers. Basically, you have many places that you can go to here even when it's raining but the question is, are you prepared to get wet and cold outside? What to do? For a semi-introvert like me, rainy days like these can be a blessing. Well for one, I don't have to spend a single dime for my family's fare, eating outside and buying things which are really unnecessary but we ended up anyway buying 'cause it appealed to us. Second, we don't have to worry what clothes to wear when we're gonna go out. Those things and others can be quite a hassle if you are a person who's feet are always itching to go out. But for me, I just love the warmth and comfort of my own home, snuggling up in bed with my baby and my wife. Those small precious moments meant so much to me. Here are a few things that you can do in Baguio even when it's pouring cats and dogs outside. Food tripping is on the top of our list of to do's when it's raining. Either you can cook your own fave comfort food at home or you can try those delicious meals they serve at local eats in the City. Bulalo is a sure fire dish that would warm up your freezing body. Rito's Bulalo is the best selling but afforable bulalo here in Baguio City and they are located at Engineer's Hill just near the Victory Liner bus terminal. Another best bulaluhan in the City is located at Baguio Slaughter House. These are mini eateries which serves bulalo, pinapaitan and other grilled dishes. Pinikpikan is also something that you should try when in Baguio. It is a local chicken soup dish much like the tinola but prepared in a native Cordilleran way. You can try the pinikpikan dish at Cafe by the Ruins at Chuntug Street, Kubo Grill located at Legarda Road and Point Grill with their two locations at SM City Baguio and Session Road. Sipping a cup of hot chocolate is pretty much someone looks forward to in wet and cold weather like this. You can order one at Cafe by the Ruins and at Chocolate De Batirol Garden Restaurant at Igorot Park, John Hay. There are many restos and eateries that you can try here at Baguio so fret not. Drinking. Local people here in Baguio are most inclined to drink when the weather is cold and wet. You can visit local acoustic bars where you can have a good drink with your friends and enjoy acoustic musics. Some of them are Rumours Bar at Session Road, Cafe Bohemian also at Session Road, Session Cafe which obviously is located at Session Road too, 18 BC Bar at Legarda Road, Cafe Will also at Legarda Road and Baguio Craft Brewery along Marcos Highway.
