I’ve been to so many places here in the Philippines already but I guess there is no place like home and Baguio City is just incomparable to other. There have been countless tourists from within and outside the Philippines whose trip to this wonderful city has been memorable and they end up coming back again. So here are the 10 reasons why you should visit and travel to Baguio City THE PEOPLE Baguio City is an amalgamation of different cultures and people from all over the Philippines. Most of them are immigrants, like us, from the different provinces of the Philippines who eventually loved and made Baguio their home. A large percent of these are from the Ilocos region which comprises of Ilocos Norte and Sur and La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Cagayan which explains the wide use of the ilocano dialect in the city and a small percent of them who are from Bicol, Pampanga, VisMin region and Manila. The original settlers though of the city are the Ibalois who inhabit the southeastern part of the province and the Kankanaeys who occupies the northeastern side of Benguet. Other igorot tribes who resides permanently in Baguio are from the nearby Mountain Province, Ifugao, and Kalinga. Due to my long period of stay here in the city, 30 years to be exact, I have come to love and embrace the Igorot culture and somehow considered myself a highlander which most of the Igorots are called. Igorots are a very hospitable, warmth and peace loving people. After your visit here you will truly feel and understand what Igorot hospitality is all about. THE CLIMATE Synonymous with Baguio City is the cool climate and temperature of the place especially during the Christmas season until the month of February. Where else in the Philippines could you get a 24/7 supply of free aircondition for free? Well yes, it's only here in Baguio. If you have thick jackets and scarves that you haven't even tried yet or maybe are just hidden forever in your wardrobes, then a visit to Baguio will surely put them in good use. Best time to visit and experience the coldness of Baguio is from the month of December until February where you will probably wake up shivering and with aching joints. Temperature here can go as low as 8 degrees Celsius during those months which is just the perfect reason for cuddling and pro creating! BAGUIO FLOWER FESTIVAL Panagbenga or the Baguio Flower Festival is an annual city wide event held every February. The celebration lasts for a month but the climax usually is showcased on the last week. The event had its humble beginnings in 1995 and for many years it has blossomed into a world class display of talents, culture and products. Love the atmosphere of festivities specially during the Street Dancing, Float Parade and the Session Road in Bloom. STRAWBERRIES Who could ever resist the sweetness of Baguio strawberries? A visit to the nearby strawberry farm in La Trinidad or in the city's public market would definitely satisfy your cravings for this little bunch of sweetness. Strawberries are endemic in the city due to its temperate climate which favors its cultivation. Prices can vary depending on the season. NATURE For nature lovers, Baguio City is the perfect place to get away from the busy metro life. Fresh air, the smell of sweet pine scent and the awesome view of mountains. Need less to say, you can have a nature overload when you are in this city. Time to give our lungs a break from air pollution and reinvigorate our weary bodies. FOODS When in Baguio, foods can be as refreshing as its ambiance. Organic is the word to describe the ingredients that most of the food establishments here in Baguio use in their menus. Straight from the farm and into the kitchen. Hmmm talking about fresh salads. And when you are in Baguio, try not to miss out on the opportunity to indulge yourself on local delicacies like the Pinikpikan with Etag, Pinuneg, or the Watwat. AMBIANCE There's just something in Baguio that when you experience and feel it you'll gonna keep on coming back and one reason could be the ambiance. Some people say that the ambiance here in Baguio is comparable to that of Paris or Venice and we know that those two places are the most romantic places in the world. Fall in love or rekindle that lost love here in Baguio. Let Baguio be the silent witness to your love story ala "That Thing Called Tadhana" mode. FOG Where else in the Philippines can you experience a genuine fog in the middle of the day? Yeah, you heard me right. Real and untainted fog that's gonna run through every bones in your body and make you chill. Yes, only here in Baguio City. SECOND HAND CLOTHES Welcome to the ukay ukay capital of the Philippines. Imagine a small city where every nook and every conceivable business spot has an ukay ukay depot. Yeah that's how it is here and it's only here in Baguio. Most of us don't know exactly how this million pesos business started. It was already here in the early 80's when we first arrived and got a boost in the mid 90's until now. I even saw big movie stars from Manila going up to Baguio just to find some cheap, signatured clothings. COUNTRY SONGS Some say that Baguio City is a Marlboro Country. Yes, that commercial where a cowboy is seen smoking a Marlboro cigarette. We're not talking about the cigarette but rather the country and western style that is deeply rooted among our Igorot brothers here in Baguio. In a way, Baguio City is somewhat patterned after the cowboy states in the US complete with country style settings, cowboys riding in horses and to top it all, playing on the air waves are country and folk songs. The love of the local people here for country and folk songs are as viral as the AlDub phenom. There's even a local radio station that is dedicated to playing pure country and folk songs. And yearly, there's an annual cowboy event here in the city. PASALUBONG Your Baguio tour wouldn't be complete without a memento to take home and Baguio has lots of them.
