It's been 25 years already and it seems that as if it only happened yesterday. July 16, 1990 is a date which will live in every minds and hearts of each Baguio residents. I still clearly remember that fateful day. I am just a lad at a young age of 11 when the tragedy struck that changed Baguio and me forever. I was in grade 6 and only a handful of us from our section were left behind to clean our classroom which was located at the second floor of our school's main building as we were the scheduled cleaners on that particular day. Children as we were, we enjoyed every bit of our tasks like it was only a child's game unmindful that we were the only people left in the entire school and all of the entire school's population had already gone home.

It has been more than a week now and the weather hasn't shown even a bit of improvement. Still wet and freezin' cold in the suppose to be summer capital of the Philippines. Started with Egay and then followed by Falcon which ultimately pulled the southwest monsoon or the Habagat which causes this unforgiving weather condition that we are currently experiencing in the Cordillera region. Rain is continuously pouring all throughout the day and add to that, intermittent strong winds which currently makes the city a not so lovely place to roam or enjoy.
Indeed, there is no such thing as forever.
After many weeks of being the hottest and trending topic on many social media sites and the boob tube, finally the never ending question on whether there is such a thing as forever has finally been laid to rest. Yesterday, July 2 was the last day of many owners at Sitio Pungayan or famously known as Sitio La Presa to remove their stalls. This is in accordance with the decision of the Court of Appeals that mandated the protection and rehabilitation of the five barangays covered by the Mount Santo Tomas Forest Reserve which also covers the famous La Presa area. |
